New Blamstrain under a new name.

So the wonderfully talented Juho Hietala AKA Blamstrain is working on some new material but under a new name Lusua. Check out the player below for some dark relaxed and funky elecktro stylings.
Lusua – Past Tense by Blamstrain
While we are here you might as well head on over to his website where you can pay what you want for any of his albums! I trust that this will start to stick as more and more musicians realise that artists Like Juho have worked out the best way to make money from their work. By allowing fans to pay the artist directly for their work I believe that they can have a much more successful musical career in the long term.

Bring back the vinyl!
Posted by michael vermaak | Filed under Music
I have always been into my music from an early age and as a child of the 80’s I grew up with lots of technology changes. My first single I received as a present was teenage mutant ninja turtles with T.U.R.T.L.E. POWER on vinyl. It was never going to be top of my list of favorite pieces of music but I do feel that at least the format was a good start. I loved putting a piece of vinyl on the platter and moving the tonearm into the precise position, slowly lowering it and being greeted by the static pop. There was always something wonderful about the process.
Tapes where so big when I was a kid, mainly for recording music off of the radio or copying albums from friends. Headphones had to be loud and would suffer under the strain of mega bass switches that would adorn Walkmans in every teenagers pockets.
Soon came time for me to start buying CDs. I loved the new format. The sound was so clean and the new technology was amazing. Being able to play an album on random was amazing. The one thing that never really happened with CD was portability, Due to this Walkmans still flourished into the late 90’s that was until a friend brought an mp3 player in 2000 that could hold an hours worth of music! We didn’t realise then what whould happen to the mp3 player in the years to come.
Not long after the mp3 player started to show up in friends pockets on a daily basis I started to want to hold the music in my hand again. To be able to appreciate the artwork on a bigger scale than a CD had given me. I started to turn back to vinyl. My first outing took me to some dark minimal beats mainly for experimentation of styles. Then by luck I found a mint copy of the Beatles Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. A record still in my collection today and one I don’t think I will ever sell. My record choice since has been focused on collecting records from the likes of Aphextwin, Squarepusher, Ceephax Acid Crew, Intricate, the list goes on and on. There is still nothing better than flicking through records checking out the artwork on the sleeve and putting the 12″ on the platter. My setup now is the best I have had for listening to my records and I have recently started to enjoy them again. All I can say is that if you have yet to experience some new fresh vinyl on a decent setup then your in for a treat.

Hudson Mohawke is just what the doctor ordered.

I’ve been on the look out for some new music that ticks a few boxes for me. Firstly it had to unlike anything in my current music collection but had to be funky and weird with a decent beat for summer time drives. Hudson Mohawke fits the bill perfectly! check out the player below for some samples of his work.

A wonderful new album Remano Eszildn – R-Tracks
Posted by michael vermaak | Filed under Music
It’s always nice when you find something new all by yourself without any help from anyone else. I just found an interesting new album called R-Tracks (iTunes link) from a very new guy on the scene “Remano Eszildn”. From what I can find out he worked as a brick layer and decided to quit. He then went to stay with his brother who had some music gear and had a play around with some synths. From there he got hold of a mono synth as he preferred the sound. Planet Mu Records have now signed him up. Although they say he’s been making music for 6 years this is the only release I can find of his.

iPhone home made amplification
Posted by Michael Vermaak | Filed under Blog, iPhone
I was getting dinner ready the other night and didn’t really want to listen to the radio but some music on my iPhone instead. The DAB radio we have in the kitchen doesn’t have an aux input so I was forced to listen to the music through the speaker on the iPhone. Not really the best speaker in the world but it works for ring tones and previewing music. Then I remembered an old trick of mine where you put your earphones up your nostrils and open you mouth and you can amplify the sound (crazy I know but it works). Not really wanting to cook dinner with my phone up my nose I grabbed a glass and popped the phone into it.

It works fairly well. The audio is much louder and you have a little bass, it is only a little bass though. The only real downside is you do get a hollow sound from the reverberation inside the glass, but for a quick improvement in volume it works quite well. If you try this let me know what works best for you. I’m going to try other things like larger vases or pint glasses
